Embrace your inner child

I know the title of this post is cheesy (I couldn't resist) but please read on! This past weekend we had some snow in London and it was significant enough for some outdoor fun; snowman building, snowball throwing and general running and stomping around in the snow. I had a great time! It made me think of something I had read recently on The Happiness Project about enjoying childish pleasures. I've been thinking about that post a fair bit in the last few weeks and realising that I really do get happiness from quite a lot of the 'childish' stuff I do with our son.

Just for the record, here is a list of some such pleasures:
  • The aforementioned playing in the snow (ditto with running through autumn leaves)
  • Building with Lego
  • Any art and craft activity
  • Colouring in
  • Children's baking (eg cookies or cakes with sprinkles, gingerbread men etc)

Let's not get confused. It's not about acting childish and abstaining from adult activities but if a childish pleasure here and there helps relax you, improve your mood or just gives you more enjoyment on any given day, then there's nothing embarassing or silly about doing it. After all, you can always use your children as an excuse!

Over to you now - what childish activities do you secretly love?

  1. Oh I completely agree!

I love the same things you mention; snow, art and crafts, building my daughter Brio train set. And I can't wait until we get baking together!

I think everything becomes more fun when little one is in tow: ambling around the town centre(ours is very small and pedestrianised) and even supermarket shopping.

I also love taking her to adventure playgrounds - especially the indoor ones where I can help her climb to the top - because then I just *have to* go down the big slides with her :D x

    1. Ha! That made me laugh about the big slides. We went to a birthday party at a soft play place recently and I kept encouraging my son to climb up to the slide so we could down together. I think I might have enjoyed it more than him ;-)

  2. Why is "childish" considered bad? Don't children know better what they like and don't like? i think childish is the way to go! I love baking, whisking batter in beat with some nice music. When my children were little, creating silly figures with Playdoh was a huge hit. :)

    1. Very good point about the word, 'childish' and I quite agree. I love the sound of your whisking batter in beat to music!

  3. Snow generally only comes once a season so my first thought this weekend was to make a snowman...something I haven't done in, well years! It made me happy and I even took a photo to capture the moment!

Running through autumn leaves makes me smile as I have memories of chasing after my dog on her daily walk...the crunching sound of the leaves beneath my feet was such a joy!

Cooking/baking is so therapeutic and getting kids involved is fun, educational and highly engaging...it's a shame they removed it from schools as an academic subject x

    1. Thanks for sharing these lovely activities and memories! I really find cooking / baking therapeutic too and you're right that it's a shame they removed it from schools - all the more reason to do it at home with your children!
